I'm working on my own PI guide right now.
It has a whole section on prospecting.
Step 1: Plan on a procssing planet and multiple extraction planets. The real profit is going to come from the items that need materials from multiple planets, and the logistics of having ONE central processing planet is sooooo much easier than trying to do some advanced processing on each planet.
Step 2: Decide what you want to build and create a shopping list of materials and ratios they will be needed in. Know the planets those materials can be extracted from.
Step 3: Determine an area that you feel safe getting in and out of (High sec = safer but lower extraction. Low sec = more dangerous but better extraction. Null sec = most dangerous but by far highest extraction). Use dotlan to find systems with planets in that area.
Step 4: Load up a cheap industrial with a cloak, a MWD, and a bunch of basic comand centers of the planet types you're interested in.
Step 5: Use the cloak and MWD to run out to the systems you are prospecting in. Get to a deep safe. Drop the CC on the planet. Scan. Drop an extractor on each hotspot. Survey. Record. Draw yourself a litte picture of the planet with the best hotspot and its extraction rates. Do all this while bouncing safes or cloaked up.
Step 6: If the planet has more than one resource type you may be interesed in, decomission the some of the "not best" extractors and repeat step 4. Connect the best extractors of the various hotspots and record the PG and CPU requierd for the links.
Step 7: Decomission the CC.
Step 8: Repeat 5-7 for each planet.
Step 9: Take all the data and do LOTS of planning of how to max production of the various resources.
Step 10: Go back and actually build your real CCs, space ports, extractors, basic processors, etc.
Costs me a bit over 1 million ISK per planet to prospect. MUCH cheaper than building an advanced CC, 12 extractors, 4 basic processors, and a spaceport on 9 differnt planets only to figure out that you have to scrap most of it to because you now produce 3x as much resource (a) and half as much resource (b) as you need and planet 1 produces all the water you'll ever need, so extracting water from planet 2 was stupid.... IN fact, everything on planet 2 you have too much of, and you really needed another temperate, not ice....
You get the point, right?
